- Engineering and project execution
Direction Team
Nathaniel Tiffany
General Manager
“I’m not chasing rainbows, I deliver results. That kind of sums up what I’m about.”
Nathaniel may be known as a visionary and a key contributors to GCM’s long-term strategy, but he knows that vision without action is just a daydream. “At GCM, we don’t overpromise, and we don’t sugarcoat things. Personally, I am very focused on results. In that way, I appreciate concrete solutions: I am all about getting things done.”
In his daily work, Nathaniel likes to check boxes, and in his nearly 20 years at GCM, he has checked his share. With increasing responsibility in each role, Nathaniel has proven he can deliver the management trifecta of quality, cost, and schedule – a balancing act in the world of engineering, where things come in hot, and clients expect us to deliver on our promises. “With a client, when you commit, you need to deliver.”
Known for his skill in responding to change both big and small, incremental or sudden, Nathaniel embodies organizational resilience. He is described as “unflappable” in a crisis, where he is trusted by both clients and colleagues for his integrity and his emotional intelligence: in other words, a true representative of GCM.
As GCM Consultants’ General Manager, Nathaniel encourages everyone in the organization, himself included, to take the widest perspective possible: from self, to team and project, to organization and client, to culture and the long term. “When we look at how our teams operate, we want people to think beyond the self, which we mostly all do naturally. But we also want the focus to extend beyond the team, even when things get tough, which can be more challenging. To get all our teams to think in terms of the larger organization and culture: for me, that is the true role of leadership.”
It is also just as important not to forget the human element. “As leaders, we need to manage more widely than just numbers in a matrix. My goal is to create an environment where people are happy to get up in the morning, excited to get into the office, glad to see their colleagues, and satisfied with their projects. To me, creating that kind of work environment is how you get the best out of people.”
For Nathaniel, this means focusing more on strengths than on weaknesses. “We want our people to get better at what they are already good at. Place people where they excel, then build on their strengths: that’s how you grow unstoppable teams.”
Collaborative, compassionate, and committed to unlocking potential in people and making sure everybody succeeds, Nathaniel shines in keeping the spirit and human side of GCM alive.
