Mathieu Bourassa

Vice-President
Mining and Metals
For me, it's about putting people first. Working through the complexity and finding a way to truly connect with the person in front of me. That’s the secret sauce behind our success.

As an Electrical Engineer, Mathieu has led many projects in various heavy industrial applications for nearly 20 years. His preference for mining projects has led him to his current role of VP Mining and Metals.

A natural problem solver, Mathieu is at his best when confronting novel situations where the path is unclear. Over his 10 years at GCM, he’s proven it again and again – when the team faces a unique challenge in defining how to approach a project or client, “when no one knows the trail,” as Mathieu puts it, he’s the one who gets the call. This pioneering mindset led to various leadership roles, building and managing technical engineering teams on a variety of heavy industrial projects across Canada and abroad.

For Mathieu, solving new problems often means finding unique human solutions, to go alongside the technical ones. “It’s about soft skills: having the empathy, adaptability, and authenticity to really connect with the person in front of me. Whether it’s with a client, a colleague, or when collaborating with people from another country or language, I easily adapt and just fit in with anyone. It’s my strong suit.”

When it comes to his clients, Mathieu is in it for the long haul – and his clients know it. If a project hits an unexpected snag, the client can always trust that GCM will take the right action, with integrity. “We never just try to maximize short-term profit,” Mathieu says, “It simply doesn’t pay to chase after the quick wins.”

“For us at GCM, it’s about collaboration. We like to compete, but in a way that nurtures a thriving business relationship – one that truly lasts.”
